When Apple first admitted that it had throttled the CPU on iPhone models beginning with the iPhone 6, many thought that Apple was taking a cue from the auto industry and was using planned obsolescence to "force" current iPhone users to update to the latest handsets. As it turns out, the guys in Cupertino released an apology that explained why it had slowed down the processing speed of the iPhone 6 and later versions.

As you've probably heard, Apple is currently facing a barrage of lawsuits and government probes over the iPhone slow downs, with a French consumer group accusing Apple of planned obsolescence. However oddly enough it now appears that Samsung is also a target of such accusations over in Italy. Samsung , as well as Apple, has now come under the spotlight in Italy in regards to the honesty and integrity of its approach to updates. As the Italian competition authority - L'Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato - has announced it is investigating both companies and in particular, the process by which they have initiated updates in the past and whether those updates have been in part designed to prematurely reduce the usability of their phones.
