On Friday, Marriott International announced a system breach that has affected approximately 500 million customers, with stolen information including names, credit card numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses, and passport numbers. The breach is one of the largest in history, after recent Yahoo breaches that compromised the accounts of nearly three billion customers .

Marriott International has revealed that its Starwood Hotel reservation database has been hacked. An investigation carried out by the company revealed that hackers have had unauthorized access to the Starwood network since 2014. The astonishing revelation means that information of half a billion guests could have been exposed - including sensitive personal data such as home address and passport number - and Marriott says there is evidence that data has been copied from its network. The Marriott International hotel group is the latest company to announce a large-scale hack of a customer database.
We have taken measures to investigate and address a data security incident involving the Starwood guest reservation database. The investigation has determined that there was unauthorized access to the database, which contained guest information relating to reservations at Starwood properties on or before September 10, 2018.
The company says that although credit card data was encrypted, it believes it possible that the hackers got the encryption keys too...

Hotel giant Marriott has revealed details of a major data breach that may have left the details of more than half a billion users exposed. The company said that "approximately" 500 million guests who had made a reservation at one of its Starwood properties could be affected, with around 327 million of these seeing personal details compromised.
