FTC collusion probe of Verizon-AT&T could halt a T-Mobile purchase of Sprint

A few days ago, we told you that the U.S. Justice Department is looking at possible collusion between Verizon, AT&T and the G.S.M.A. trade group. The three allegedly attempted to develop a way for a carrier to keep a phone locked to its network even with the use of eSIM technology. The latter is embedded in some devices, replacing the standard SIM card. A phone that features eSIM can be more easily switched from one carrier to another by sending a message to both the old and new provider. G.S.M.A. Releases Statement On eSIM Collusion Investigation

Following reports that the four major U.S. mobile carriers and others may be under investigation for eSIM collusion, the Global System Mobile Association has now released an official statement on the matter. According to an official post from the group, made via its website, work on its upcoming version of specifications standards for universal eSIMs has been placed on hold until the investigation concludes. Antitrust lawyers at the Justice Department are reportedly investigating AT&T and Verizon for possible collusion.
Published reports cite people close to the investigation as saying the government is trying to determine whether the rival wireless carriers have worked together to make it more difficult for consumers to switch from one cell phone company to another.
The Justice Department has a policy of not commenting on potential investigations.
