AT&T Invests In Magic Leap, Agrees New Product Partnership

AT&T is investing in mixed reality startup Magic Leap and has also formed a product partnership with the Plantation, Florida based company, the duo announced Wednesday. The size of the investment hasn't been disclosed, nor did the two firms reveal many details about their new partnership, save for saying they'll be working together on enabling the next generation of computing. Magic Leap has been working on its augmented reality glasses for quite some time now and the company still hasn't confirmed when they're going to be available. Magic Leap One, Creator Edition is the company's first product which will deliver an enhanced augmented reality experience. The device is scheduled to ship later this year to qualified designers and developers. AT&T has announced that it will provide data for the AR glasses and that it's also the exclusive wireless distributor of Magic Leap products in the U.S.

U.S. carriers like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint are concerned that a recent report from Dow Jones is true. The word is that the 2018 Apple iPhone models will replace the tradition SIM card and SIM tray for an embedded eSIM chip. If this does occur, iPhone users will have a lot of flexibility when it comes to cellular connectivity. Unlike a SIM card, which is obtained from the user's wireless provider and must be inserted in a phone for it to connect to that provider's network, an eSIM is programmed OTA.
