Yahoo is scanning emails on the hunt for more user data to sell to advertisers, The Wall Street Journal reports, claiming that Verizon's subsidiary Oath which owns the company is now pitching such a service to marketers. The firm claims it has access to over 200 million Yahoo Mail and AOL Mail inboxes and can scan them for certain keywords or for the purpose of analyzing more general behavior trends that could be useful to ad industry professionals. Oath - the owner of Yahoo - is in talks with advertisers, promoting a service that scans the content of emails and provides a wealth of information about users. The service would give advertisers access to data contained in over 200 million Yahoo Mail inboxes. Email scanning would also apply to AOL Mail inboxes, also owned by Oath. As noted by the Wall Street Journal, Oath is now the only major US email provider than scans emails in this way - and the way to opt out is well-hidden. If you've got a Yahoo or AOL email address then your correspondence might not be as private as you think, as Oath uses a program that scans accounts, with over 200 million inboxes scanned in total. That's according to The Wall Street Journal , which reports that these scans are designed to look for information contained in your emails that can then be sold to advertisers to help them provide targeted ads.
